97pounder!

Hi all,
I have never grown a large watermelon until this year and even then 21 lbs is not really giant. I have 64 square feet and am wondering the best vine pattern. Do you just let it grow out? Christmas tree? Please let me know.
Thanks,
Leif

64 square feet is might small area I never used a vine pattern.Just let the spaghetti grow to the boundary making sure the vines root in that touch soil.

you place the plant in the middle and it grows out in all directions.

It only roots at the stump.

Why does it only root at the Stump Bill?

Watermelons will root down at leaf nodes just like a pumpkin. I personally dont let mine root down but I know several growers want that secondary root growth incase they have stump failure. Everybody has different opinions on if you should or shouldnt let the plants root down

In Frank Mudd's presentation at the virtual Big Show, he said that he grows from the stump and the rest of the patch is covered with landscape fabric and straw blanket. One method from the world champion.
