I burned the grass here shortly after the first fall rain (1), and then the adjacent area a couple weeks later (2). In terms of re-establishing a cover for the winter, or for grazing, its definitely better to burn sooner and give the grass those extra couple weeks... it may be hard to see, but there's about twice as much greenery in the foreground.
The soil in this area has been hopelessly poor but its getting better. Someday it may grow something. I'm tinkering with it, trying different things. Burning the grass stubble reduces habitat for the voles. Thats the main reason for it. But I was also curious to see if it would have a good effect on the health of the grass and the soil (mostly via biochar).
