9.    Talk with Others

This can be an intimidating task, especially for new growers, but this is an important act that can help improve your success. There are many different ways to accomplish this seemingly basic task.

First off, going to a weigh-off with or without a pumpkin is one way to quickly learn who is in your area. Learning about the challenges of the season and who was able to adapt and adjust can allow you to pick-up valuable suggestions for improvement. This often lets you quickly know who is in your local area.

Second, there are diaries and posting here on bigpumpkins.com There is a strong establishment of season growers here and what makes this important is that many are willing to chime in and help growers of all levels. Now, do not take this as a free for all on questions, at this moment there is access to years of information to provide a starting point. After doing this initial research it will allow you to ask more detailed and in-depth questions.

Third, there are off-season growers meetings that can also be another valuable resource. These can include some local events or the International GPC Convention which is a great opportunity if you are able to attend.

When it comes to the actual conversation, be sure to introduce yourself and have a few key questions ready. Or you can have a recent soil test in-hand for more experienced growers to take a look at as this shows your seriousness and while you may get some different answers from different growers, it will still be a great conversation starter.
