I hadnt heard the term "preferential flow" before. But this is is a useful word/concept its similar to what happens when you water a dry potted plant and a lot of the water goes straight down the sides of the pot & comes out the bottom (without soaking through the soil first).
Another artcle said this can be a good thing, healthy for roots, probably because it makes it harder to overwater (its hard to create stagnated water in the soil when it has "HOV/express lane" channels to bypass the more resistant areas).
Maybe if you've got a diseased patch then maybe your patch would like a bit of "preferential flow" this year.

Interesting one. A lot of implications for specific soil type and cover crop selection.
