What are the major reasons for foaming stumps? I'm guessing Terts being cut off and heavy watering aren't a good idea. First time for me in 8 years. Happened at my nephews and he just uses manure and grass/leaves topsoil and sand. Built up about a foot above ground. Well mixed and aged. Tried saving it and ended up cutting it off at about 2'. Thoughts?

It seems to be a water pressure issue. Pumpkin growth and vine growth and low humidity relieve pressure. Closed stomata, terminated growth, high humidity and possibly over watered soil add pressure.

I think putting a fan on the stump early might help. I havent heard of west coast growers getting it which makes me think its a humidity / condensation issue... it seems like if the plant pulls cold water from deep down then as it flows up through the stem the coldness of the water flowing up through the stump could cause condensation/ perpetual wetness on the stump. Thats an alternate theory... nothing here to discredit the turgor theory. Just another idea.

In my patch it usually does happen in wet humid weather in the early part of the season (late June through July.) You see the stump start to swell and get "too big". It's usually not a good thing and it wont be long before you see foaming or a wet ring of soil around the stump.. oops I mean crown. It will likely need to be drained and cleaned before rot starts to go up the vine. Some growers are more successful at it then others. I have been unsuccessful so far.

Thanks Joe. High humidity was a problem last year and definitely overwatered at the time. Rarely have high humidity like last year. Water meter attachment added after showed the over watering. Foaming stump started First week of July so kin was real small but growth was good on vines and only a couple secondaries terminated. Also believe the manure wasn't aged quite enough and contributed to vine rot issues all summer.

Big Moon I was mentoring my Nephew last year and with hip and back issues I couldn't walk his boards and never saw the stump until he mentioned it to me. Was probably a week before I saw it and it was shot. Tried to save it but knew it was unlikely with rot already into ground and down the vine plus a big pile of puke on the ground. Might have saved it if caught sooner. He knows what to look for now. Thanks T

Tend to think it's more than just pressure yes tipping is what brings it on for me but when it happens it smells bad straight away so there is rot in their before the foam or as it develops
